Round 7: Carey vs Melbourne
After the very challenging game last week against Caulfield, we were looking to bounce back against Melbourne, one place above us on the ladder. The game started with us pressing and creating many early turnovers so that after 3 minutes we were up 10-0 with Josh Butler and Nathan Brown connecting from outside.  A time out was called and after that we stretched our lead to 16-2.  Melbourne moved to a zone and our scoring dried up, but at the half we still lead 25-8.  In the second half Melbourne gradually built momentum and came at us, gradually closing to within 2 points with 3 minutes to play.  We moved back to a press and created a number of turnovers to eventually close out the game 49-35.

Top Scorers: Josh Butler 21, Nathan Brown 10, Tom Cornelius 6

Round 6: Carey vs Caulfield
We were up against a Caulfield team which has been undefeated for 2 and a half years and has most of the same personnel in it as they are now in Year 12. We played as though we were clearly intimidated early and quickly fell well behind. At the half we trailed 41-6 and were struggling to contain them, allowing many turnovers. As the game continued we regained some composure and started to create some scoring opportunities as Peter Vermont and Zach Rose started to bring the ball down more confidently. We still struggled to contain their many offensive threats but fought hard and went down 80-24.

Round 5: Carey vs Haileybury
The first 15 minutes of the game was a very low scoring affair where both teams played tight defence. Lachlan Addison hit a couple of early baskets but at the 15 minute mark we trailed 10-4. A loss of focus late in the first half saw Haileybury score in transition and suddenly it was out to 19-5 at the half. In the second half we played well below our abilities and ended up going down 50-17.

Round 4: Carey vs St Kevins
This was to be a key game for Carey as the two teams appeared to be evenly matched.  We started off strongly and 10 minutes in ran out to a 14-7 lead thanks to hitting a number of perimeter shots and tight defence.  We then went back into our shells and continued to try to hit the perimeter shots which were now not working as StKevins tightened their defence.  We did not score for the rest of the half and at half time trailed 14-15.  In the second half we attacked the key more consistently getting the ball in to Lachlan Addison and Michael Mazzocato more regularly and moved out to lead by 4 points with 5 minutes to go when their centre was fouled out.  This changed the balance considerably and despite StKevins trying to send us to the free throw line each possession over the last 3 minutes (we hit an improved 16 out of 24 in the second half) we ended up winning 44-32.

Top Scorers: Josh Butler 12, Josh McCormack 6, Michael Mazzocato 6, Nathan Brown 6, Mitchell Dyson 6, Tom Cornelius 5

Round 3: Carey vs Wesley
From early in the game we struggled to find a way to the basket and yet in the first half our defence was strong focusing on denial of Wesley’s bigs in the post. We were able to compete based on a very tight 2 / 3 zone and at half time trailed 20 to 15.  In the second half Wesley increased the defensive pressure and we were unable to score. As a result of poor offensive execution and too many individual moves we turned the ball over and failed to score for a long period in the second half. Wesley had not been able to convert from the perimeter in the first half, but as their confidence grew connected on a number of three point shots to lead by 15 points. Coach Moresi cleared the bench and ran the second five for the last ten minutes of the second half. Final scores were Wesley 51 to Carey 20 (only managing 5 points in the second half).  A tough week ahead for the Carey boys with lots of work on our offensive structures during training.

Round 2: Carey vs Scotch
We began in great style against one of the stronger teams in the competition in Scotch and our aggressive defence and positive offense took us out to a 16-7 lead, with Josh Butler hitting from the perimeter and Nathan Brown and Michael Mazzocato hitting the boards hard.  Scotch then started to get the ball inside to their centre and came back with a strong run to level at 16 all.  We steadied and lead at the half 27-22.  In the second half Scotch became very physical at both ends and unfortunately there were few fouls called.  We kept within striking distance at the 10 minute mark, but as their confidence grew Scotch started to hit from the perimeter and we lost focus so that the final margin of 54-36 did not reflect the difference between the two teams.

Top scorers: Mitchell Dyson 10, Nathan Brown 8, Josh Butler 7.

Round 1: Carey vs Xavier
Xavier looked the more settled team early in the game and quickly broke out to a 7-2 lead.  We settled down as the game continued and worked hard on the boards.  Josh Butler and Zac Rose both hit 3s and Josh McCormack created opportunities off the dribble and at the half we trailed by a point, 22-21, which could have been worse if Bryce Leyden had not hit a basket from behind the centre line on the buzzer.  In the second half we continued to play well and pulled out to a 6 point lead with only our missed free throws keeping Xavier in the game.  Xavier came back to level and we went into extra time.  After falling behind we finished strongly to win 44-41 in what was a tense and exciting game.

Top scorers: Josh Butler 11, Josh McCormack 11, Zac Rose 8

Round 7: Carey vs Haileybury
We started our game against Haileybury very well, scoring on the break and dominating the boards to lead 26-12 at the half.  Lucas Seymour was dominant inside and James Bett was penetrating their defence regularly.  In the second half we struggled to score and scores tightened up to level the scores with 2 minutes remaining. Fortunately we steadied with a couple of baskets to Lucas late in the game and ran out winners 40-35. This takes our record to 5-2 going into the redraw.

Top Scorers: Lucas Seymour 15, James Bett 8, Cam Marshall 5

Round 6: Carey vs Melbourne
Melbourne began the team with only 4 players but we were not able to convert our opportunities and once the extra players arrived for Melbourne it turned into a dour defensive game by both teams. Lucas Seymour in his first game back was always a threat and scored 6 of our 10 first half points. At the half we lead 10-6 in a very lacklustre game (between both teams we hit 2 out of 16 foul shots in the first half). In the second half we upped the defensive tempo and moved to a full court man-to-man and then to a press. Gradually this broke the confidence of the Melbourne teams and we were able to convert on the break with James Bett and Alasdair Mitchell Ferguson creating problems for Melbourne. We ran out comfortable winners in the end 33-13

Top Scorers: Lucas Seymour 10, James Bett 8, Alasdair Mitchell Ferguson 7

Round 5: Carey vs St Kevins
This was a tight game between two evenly matched teams. St Kevins got an early lead on the back of a pair of 3 pointers and lead 10-4 at the 8 minute mark. We then started to increase the defensive tempo and moved into a zone which created more transition opportunities for ourselves. We moved strongly to the basket and ended up on the free throw line on a number of occasions. We went on a 13-0 run and hit the lead, but StKevins hit another 3 on the half to only trail 17-13. In the second half the game tightened up and it was only through some late pressing and conversion that we were able to move out to win by 6 points 31-25. Leith Wallis was a key target throughout the game and lead all scorers.

Top Scorers: Leith Wallis 12, Jesse Young 6, James Bett 6, Ronak Narajan 4

Round 4: Carey vs Scotch
We played Scotch and in the first half we were able to contain their scoring quite well, but were not able to create scoring opportunities ourselves (we only hit 2 field goals in the first half) so by half time we were well down 22-5.  In the second half we moved to a zone and attacked the free balls with much more determination and so the second half scores were almost even (14-19).  James Bett hit some nice baskets on the drive and Tyler Brenchley toiled away hard on the boards against much larger opponents.  The final scores were 41-19.

Top Scorers: James Bett 6, Leith Wallis 4, Tyler Brenchley 4

Round 2: Carey vs Wesley
We were missing both Lucas Seymour and Jesse Young this week so we were always going to struggle on the boards, but we were the faster team and wanted to use the ball in the open court and in transition.  Unfortunately we were not able to convert the opportunities we had in the first half and found it difficult to score so despite some very strong defence on our part we trailed 15-7 at half time.  In the second half we pressed and created a number of turnovers, quickly drawing to within a point at 15-14.  But Wesley were able to control the boards and our scoring dried up so that we were outscored from that point 19-4 and went down 34 to 18

Top Scorers: Lachlan Evans 9, Justin Maciburko 6
